He had just returned from Yale University at the time of the Civil War, and was presented with a Cross of Honor for his participation in the Civil War as a private with Andrew Ruthven Gordon's Company "E", Eleventh Tennessee Cavalry. He was wounded at Dandridge, Tennessee, January 1863. He applied for and got a pension. Pension #S2793, county of Giles, Tennessee.
