He enlisted in the Confederate Army Jan. 1, 1863 but was rejected because of his age. Later he entered under Major Holman, Company E, 11th Tennessee Regiment, Bell's Brigade, Jackson's Division. He served till his surrender at Gainsville, Alabama on May 10, 1865 in the same Regiment.  When carpet-bag rule became too oppressive, he joined the Klu Klux Klan and served as the Cyclop of the 17th District of Pulaski County for four years. He then moved to Arkansas in 1870.
