Thomas first joined the Haneville Guards, 6th Alabama Infantry in July of 1861 to fight for the Confederacy, but was discharged in August of that same year for sickness.  He then joined Company "H", Wert Adams Regiment at Bowling Green Kentucky in January of 1862, there he remained until after the battle of "Luka, Mississippi" when he was honorably discharged for not being 18 years of age.  He then joined Sanderson's Company "I", 53 Alabama Cavalry in January of 1863 at Montgomery, and remained in this company till surrender on the 1st of May, 1865 at Augusta, Georgia.
